Samuel Kirkland diaries [microform], 1764-1808.

Diaries of Samuel Kirkland, Congregational clergyman and missionary, kept from 16 Nov. 1764 - 2 May 1765; 23 Sept.- 13 Nov. 1771; 21 July 1775 - 3 Sept. 1775; 27 Nov. 1786 - 12 Aug 1788; 3 May 1790 - 21 Nov. 1796; and 7 Nov. 1801 - 31 Jan. 1808 (with significant gaps). The diaries describe Kirkland's missionary travels in upstate New York and Stockbridge, Mass., many of which were undertaken on behalf of Sir William Johnson, Superintendent of Indian Affairs for British North America, and the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge. Kirkland notes duties performed including taking a census of Indian populations and gauging their disposition toward Christianity; attending treaty negotiations; and preaching and ministering to the Indians.
